The epic adventure of a 160-pound English Mastiff and the twentysomething girl who grew up alongside her—“as much a story about growing up as about letting go of things that cannot be changed…and a reminder of the profound healing connection that can exist between humans and the pets they love” (Kirkus Reviews). When Lauren Fern Watt moved to New York after college, she took her 160-pound English Mastiff, Gizelle, with her. And though it wasn’t easy, she managed to find a dog-friendly (albeit tiny) apartment in the middle of it all—Times Square. Gizelle was there for Lauren’s first job, her mother’s struggle with addiction, her New York romances, and the ups and downs of becoming an adult in the big city. But when Gizelle got sick, Lauren realized her best friend might not be such a constant after all, and she designed an epic bucket list to make the absolute most of the time they had left. Bursting with charm, Gizelle’s Bucket List is “an inspirational, uplifting experience that will leave you feeling that anything is possible. For anyone who has had a pet; who has loved and lost; who has hoped for the future, this is an enchanting story of an unlikely journey that will stay with you for a long time” (Elle, UK).

Why I picked this one up: (Knowing I would cry)Because I grew up with English Mastiffs. I grew up at dogs shows, veterinary clinics, raising and eventually selectively breeding them. Our male was ranked one of the top 100 mastiffs in the United States. Our puppies were potty trained before they left our house, and they ALWAYS smelled like baby wipes. I remember the beautiful blue eyes of the puppies the day they opened their little eyes, and I remember them being so top heavy that when they started to push themselves up, they would topple over bc their heads weighted too much. And that puppy breath! <3 So seeing a mastiff on the cover of this book, there was no way I wasn't picking this one up. My mom wants it now, but I know she will cry! As soon as Lauren kept making the comment "but she's only 6", they rarely make it to 8 years old. Ours made it to 10, 11 & 12 and we lost one male to cancer at 8. BUT they ALWAYS had a nice big steak the night before we had to say goodbye. Now for the actual review!Characters/Story:There was no need to build up the characters in this story. This story was about Gizelle and Lauren. People come and go, and those friendships, although important to both Gizelle and Lauren and the story, were brief. This reminded me a little of a "walk down memory lane".A long coffee shop conversation with someone that needed years of catching up.An interview without the questions. So this is simple, and not overly in depth. Lauren focuses on the times that are important to her, the memories that mattered to her and deeply impacted her life. There were times that her relationship with Gizelle seemed to be slightly sidelined and Lauren's life picked up a little, but Gizelle was always around and if you are familiar with these dogs they do, honest to goodness, fit in the most unbelievable places.Writing:Crisp and clear. VERY minimal grammatical/spelling errors. (Then again I cried the last 40-ish pages, so I could be wrong.) If they existed, they did not stand out to me.Gizelle's Bucket List was a quick, enjoyable read. Even though it was sad, it was a passionate story about a girl and her dog. The stories were hilarious at times, and became even more entertaining being so familiar with the breed. Those dramatic scenes of pulling themselves off the furniture, that back end truly does "slowly" follow and that long stretch before they actually remove those back legs from the couch. (hahaha)The big old yawns, and those unsure warning barks. These dogs DO NOT believe that personal space exists. What is theirs is theirs and what is yours is also theirs. They are too big to argue with. The Ending:Throughout the story Lauren develops and grows. The things you learn from dogs can be unbelievable. Who would think that a dog could teach us so much about unconditional love and not judging people. You watch Lauren grow in this story, and in the 6 years that she was able to spend with Gizelle taught her so much about moving on, saying goodbye and letting go. This is truly a rewarding story with tidbits of laughter and the invasion of personal space. When you say goodbye to an animal, you truly do "feel" them leave the room. It was beautiful, but I do have to stop now because I'm going to cry again. :(
